- The symbols that Microsoft now calls “formatting marks” were previously referred to as “nonprinting characters.” By either name, they are characters that take up space or have a formatting function but do not appear on the printed page: spaces, tab characters, paragraph breaks, and the like.
- As Office-Watch reader, Peter C. Noted in an email to us “I cannot seem to access symbols not visible in the panel, has Microsoft intentionally restricted the range of non-keyboard characters and symbols available on the Mac version of Word? The Word for Mac dialog only shows the first 228 characters in a font! That’s OK for an old-fashioned ASCII font but modern Unicode fonts can have.

Showing/Hiding Non-printing Characters
Non-printing characters indicate where you ended a paragraph, pressed , or pressed (Figure 3.8). You can show or hide non-printing characters as you work on a Word document. Being able to see non-printing characters is especially helpful when you're trying to locate multiple tab characters where only one should be or when you're looking for errant punctuation, such as blank paragraphs or extra spaces. See Table 3.2 for a complete list of non-printing characters.
Figure 3.8 When displayed, non-printing characters are a faint gray.
